Q: What is play therapy?

Play Therapy is a form of therapy that utilizes play, a child’s natural language, to address psychological difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.  The toys used in play therapy are like the child’s words and play is the child’s language.  When children are able to play out their thoughts and feelings to an individual who understands, the children feel better because their feelings have been released.  In play therapy, children learn how to express their thoughts and feelings in helpful ways, to assist with controlling their behavior, making decisions, and accepting responsibility.  Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate evidenced based intervention to be used with children ages 3 through 12 years old.
